Modern Era Archetypes
Sun & Moon through Sword & Shield — GX, V, and VMAX dominance.
Overview
The Modern era spans the Pokemon-GX mechanic (Sun & Moon, 2017) through Pokemon-V, VMAX, and VSTAR (Sword & Shield, 2020-2023). Zoroark GX toolbox defined 2017-2018 with its Trade ability and Mind Jack raw damage — the deck ran for nearly two full seasons. Tag Team GX pairs like Pikachu & Zekrom GX (Pikarom) and Reshiram & Charizard GX arrived in 2019 and reshaped the three-prize metagame. The SWSH era opened with ADP (Arceus/Dialga/Palkia GX Tag Team + Zacian V) as the first format-warping deck, followed by Mew VMAX / Fusion Strike engine, Arceus VSTAR (the VSTAR mechanic's coming-out party), and Lugia VSTAR with Archeops acceleration as the pre-rotation endboss. Alternate Art cards — introduced in Battle Styles and standardized through Evolving Skies — redefined set collectibility, turning the Eeveelution Alt Arts into modern grails. Many Modern-era decks remain competitive in Expanded format, where the larger card pool keeps the format deep and combo-heavy.

Часто задаваемые вопросы
01 Are Modern-era decks still competitive?
In Expanded format — yes. Arceus VSTAR, Lugia VSTAR, and Lost Box remain competitive in Expanded events. Standard has rotated most of these out. Several GX-era combos (Zoroark GX + Oranguru, Gardevoir GX + Zoroark GX) still see play in Expanded and rogue brews.
02 What made VMAX cards so powerful?
VMAX Pokemon had massive HP (310-340) and powerful 200+ damage attacks, but gave up 3 Prizes on knockout. The tradeoff between durability and prize cost defined the format — and the emergence of single-prize attackers as dedicated counter-play shifted how decks were built.
03 Why did Modern-era decks stop winning in Standard?
Rotation. The annual Standard rotation cycle retires the oldest sets each year; by September 2023 most SWSH sets had rotated out. The Scarlet & Violet ex mechanic also power-crept certain niches: modern ex cards match VMAX HP while giving only 2 Prizes, making three-prize strategies less efficient.
04 What cards from this era are still format-defining?
In Expanded: Scoop Up Net, Battle VIP Pass, Path to the Peak (Stadium), and the Lost Zone engine (Comfey + Colress's Experiment + Mirage Gate) all remain pillars. Collectively, the Alt Art VMAX chase category reshaped modern set design and remains the template for today's SIR variants.
